Tinto Architecture: A Year in Review
As we reflect on the past year, we’re proud to share some of the highlights from an exciting and productive 12 months at Tinto. From beautiful designs to business growth, here’s a rundown of a few things we’ve been up to.
January – Kingston upon Thames
We started the year strong with the submission of a planning application for a striking six-storey apartment block in Kingston-upon-Thames. Designed in collaboration with CoCity, this thoughtfully detailed red-brick development will feature 20 spacious units, each with generous amenities, including a communal rooftop terrace. A decision is expected in January 2025, huge thanks to Narro, Harley Haddow, Clarke Banks, Soben, and ET Planning for their contributions to this project. Our Associate Technician Leyton Still is looking forward to developing the technical design in 2025!

February – Kingseat Concept Design
Our concept design for an exquisite extension at Kingseat began taking shape early this year, with construction scheduled to start in 2025. Working with Revit, Fay Stables modelled the intricate roof profile and interfaces, showing how BIM software will be invaluable in refining the construction details as the project progresses.

March – Celebrating Women in Architecture
We marked International Women’s Day with two milestones. Fay Stables celebrated becoming a fully qualified architect after passing her Part 3 Examination. Meanwhile, Catriona joined a panel at RGU to share her insights from 25 years of practice, inspiring the next generation with the theme #InspireInclusion. Congratulations, Fay, and Catriona.

April – Working with Berryhill Land and Planning
In the spring, we signed Berryhill Land and Planning as our go-to advisers on all Planning matters. Marianne Evans set up the business following 25 successful years with a renowned local housebuilder. We are delighted that Marianne has now advised us on several projects to a successful conclusion, including assisting the team with the development of the design and application for Stoneywood House.

May – Littlewood Extension
Smaller projects can also spark the imagination of our creative design team. In May we worked on a characterful extension in Deeside’s conservation area. Alyx Stickle, our Architectural Technologist, received praise from local planners for designing a solution that is both sensitive to its surroundings and brimming with character. Construction is set to begin in early 2025.

June – Belmont Cinema Launch
June saw the fundraising launch of The Belmont Community Cinema, hosted at Sugarbird Wines. We presented our exciting new designs, created by our talented Associate Director of Interiors, Lizzi Nutt, for this vital city-centre project, which has since progressed to planning submission. A heartfelt thank you to the Trustees for their enthusiasm and support!

July – Rubislaw Den Project
This summer, work began on a beautiful, listed property in Rubislaw Den. Our Interior Designer, Lisa McGirr, created a bespoke kitchen and home bar, which will be built by Swaans Crafted Interiors. The project also includes a full interior design for this historic family home.

August – Wallace Tower
August marked the start of work on the wonderful Wallace Tower, the 17th-century building relocated to Seaton Park in 1969. Now owned by Tillydrone Community Development Trust, the project reached an exciting phase with drone footage captured by Bold St Media showing the transformation in progress. Our Technical Director Steve Martin is working closely with Chap Construction to bring this project to a successful conclusion in 2025.

September – Cottage Refurbishment
In September, we began the refurbishment of a charming cottage, incorporating a bespoke staircase designed in collaboration with Angus + Mack. Continuing our work to create thoughtful design and craftsmanship in every detail.

October – Tinto Annual Conference
In October, led by our Finance and Office Manager Diane Mathieson, our team, joined by Alastair McGill, gathered for our annual conference at The Chester Hotel in Aberdeen. It was a great two days that gave us the opportunity to connect, reflect, and strategize for the year ahead.
Our Sketch-up whiz, Assistant Architect Horacio Bacarreza, had some fantastic ideas for developing our 3d visualisation offering. More to come in 2025!

November – Glasgow Office Launch
We expanded westward with the opening of our new Glasgow office at The Briggait. Led by Ciara McInnes, with over a decade of experience, and Associate Interior Designer Lizzi Nutt, the team is set to continue to build Tinto across the Central Belt. We celebrated this milestone with a launch event at Material Source which included many of our wonderful family, friends, suppliers and clients!

December - 130 Union Street + RT Michies Talk
Richards passion for his home city of Aberdeen led to an invitation to talk at Charles Michies about the future of the city centre. It was great to see some of the Our Union Street team in attendance.
Following a successful planning approval earlier this year we also submitted the building warrant application for 130 Union Street, a beautiful listed building spearheading the development of historic buildings in the city centre.

As we look ahead to the coming year, we’re excited to see these projects evolve and to embrace new challenges. Thank you to all that have supported us!
