The Baxter Hostel

In 2012, property developer brothers Mike and Ross Baxter undertook a challenge.

With high ambitions, the brothers looked to enter the competitive hospitality industry in Edinburgh by creating a hostel that would stand out from the crowd. With no previous hospitality experience, it was crucial that the project was a success. After the brothers acquired a rundown working man's club behind Apple's flagship store on Princes Street, it was time for TINTO to begin work and bring our experience and vision to this most exciting project.

Our first challenge was getting past building regulations and achieving technical compliance. We then considered how the space would attract clients – developing designs for an environment of luxury and comfort.

The Baxter is the first of its kind – a boutique hostel in the heart of a World Heritage Site. With the brothers' personality all over the building, the edgy if not eccentric style delivers a unique hostel experience. It has received rave reviews, and currently has a Booking.com rating of 8.6, a Hostelworld rating of 8.7 and are #24 on TripAdvisor for Edinburgh Specialty Lodging.

Not bad, not bad at all.

"The success of The Baxter is in no small part due to the efforts of TINTO. Aesthetically, we are over the moon with the result and are regularly complimented on the design.

TINTO took the time to understand what our clients are all about and carried this through without ego into practical robust solutions that become part of the DNA of our organisation."
